Good Habbit (Luke 22:39-46)
The Black Death was a deadly plague that swept through entire Europe in the 14th century. 1/3 of the population died but surprisingly, none of the Jewish people who were living in Europe did not die from that disease. Therefore, there was a rumor that the Jewish people have spread the disease. How come Jewish people were fine? Jewish people had good habits. Back then, the Europeans had no sense of hygiene. In contrast, Jewish people always washed their hand before they ate and took a bath before they went to church. These customs saved the Jewish's life from the deadly plague. There are only two percent of Jewish in U.S. population. But that two percent of Jewish people is greatly affecting United States' politic, economy, and customs. 20% of top 100 wealthiest people in U.S. are Jewish. 20% of the most prominent college professors of United States are Jewish. Out of total 750 Novelists, 173 are Jewish. What is so special about these Jewish people? They have very acknowledgeable customs. Young Jewish are trained to learn Talmud. As they were learning, they have developed to think deeply about the problems and debate about it. These have made Jewish different from other people.
Likewise, habits are very important. Habits greatly affect our daily lives. Bad habits lead us to bad path and can ruin our lives but good habits lead us to blessings. As well in the Bible, many great people told in the Bible had good habits. One of the examples of those people is Jesus. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. (Luke 2:42) He was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him. Luke, 4:16, “He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read." Mark 10:1, "Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them." He was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him. Luke 22:39, “Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him." While Jesus was preparing for his death, he went up to the Mount of Olives as usual. Everything that Jesus did was his habit since when he was a young boy. Jesus' life was full of the grace of God. That is why Jesus had many successful accomplishments. Like him, we need to have graceful habits. We desire to become like Jesus but due to lack of good habits, we cannot. We must developed good habits and pass that down to our children.
Those people with good habits can keep their faith strong and firm even through adversities. They come to church every Sunday, read bible and pray every day, and offer their tithes to the Lord. However, people who do not have good habits like these fall easily. Their hearts and minds waver due to temptation and eventually fall. That is why we need have graceful habits to keep our faith strong in any situation. Truthfully, it is very hard to have good habits because of bad habits we have been practicing since we were children.
There is a book called "Happy Habits for Me.” It tells the reasons why changing habits are not an easy thing. It says that people wants to be settled just the way they are and be with familiar stuff. For example, people who smoke has habit of smoking the same amount everyday so it is hard to quit smoking. Trying to change habits is greatly interrupted by bad habits. It is prior to find out the bad habbits first before trying to make good habits. Infatuation to TV, waking up late on weekends, excessively hanging around with people and wasting things are the common habits that needs to be fixed. Most of all, the temptation from Satan is the greatest obstacle we must overcome in order to create good habits.
Satan intervenes with our habits so deeply that we fall into temptation all the time. It creates bad habits that hinder us from making good habits. You may have experienced a lot before. Like when trying to read bible, you may have tempted to watch TV, talk or text to friends, or go on a computer instead. In order to overcome those obstacles, we must have great faith in our Holy Spirit and God. What should we do to have good habits?
There was an experiment at University of New Mexico to find out why people exercise periodically. They experimented 266 people who exercised at least three times a week. People usually exercise because during their time of recess or to get rid of their stress. But the people who exercised periodically had different reasons to why they exercise. Some say they exercise because it makes them feel very good and fresh. Their passion to exercise was because they wanted to feel more freshness and accomplishments. Likewise, we must have passion to make good habits. For example, people who pray need to have an ardent wish to gain blessings, grace, and the faith of God.
We need to continuously repeat and repeat until the habit becomes the habit of our daily lives. According to the University of London, they experimented and found out how much it takes for a person to grow a habit that is done automatically without thinking. The people had two choices to whether to have an apple after every meal or run for five minutes after dinner and execute either of them every day. The solution was that most people took 66 days to do one of those habits automatically without thinking. In order to have a good habit, we need to repeat that action for at least 66 days. Then it will become part of our daily habit and our body will automatically perform that habbit easily. For example, read the same amount of the Bible for at the same time every day for at least 66 days unremittingly. Then it will become a good habit. A divine habit is the fruit of iteration.
3. Encouragement is necessary.
There are situations when a person's life completely changes. Mostly, it is due to a trauma of an accident or a shocking incident. For an example, one man started to go to church after his wife who always preferred him to go to church died. People can change through our own will. Some people are preferred to change their habit with other's encouragement. Some desire to quit smoking but it is not easy to do just by them. They need help and encouragement from others. Once they get them, they eventually succeed quitting smoking. Same thing goes for us. We need to get advices from others who can help us make good habuts. We need to share our best and passions with each other. We need to pray for each other. Then we believe in our ales that we can do it and succeed. Jesus won over every obstacle with his faith and prayers. He had the habit of praying for everything every day.
Many people know that they need to pray but do not put into action because it is not easy for them. That is why we must have desire, repetition and do our best with other's advice to make prayer into a good habit.
